Program Background

Getting Ahead Groups in Howard County are an outgrowth of the Bridges Out of Poverty initiative of the Board to Promote Self-Sufficiency.  The initiative is a two part model that can change the culture of poverty in a community.  Bridges Out of Poverty provides a framework for service providers to examine how they view and treat those in poverty, while Getting Ahead groups enable people in poverty to investigate the effects of poverty on their personal resources and what it takes to improve those resources.

What will group members do?

  • Investigate the hidden rules of poverty, middle class and wealth to identify what causes poverty and what changes it
  • Use what they learn in the group to build mental models of what life is like now and what they want it to be in the future
  • Work with others in a team to find and organize resources to create stability and resources in their personal life
  • Make concrete plans for economic security and enjoy the power that comes from solving problems to control their own life
  • Get paid $50.00/session; that’s $400 for completing the entire program!
