HopeWorks of Howard County is pleased to announce that our agency is expanding to include the work and services of Shari’s Promise, Inc. Shari’s Promise, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, worked for five years in Howard County with a mission “to end child sexual abuse any way [they] can, empower survivors, and teach communities to prevent, recognize the signs, and react responsibly.” This work will now be continued as a program within HopeWorks.
One of the ways HopeWorks will keep the mission of Shari’s Promise alive is through our new child sexual abuse prevention training, Stewards of Children®, produced by Darkness to Light.
Darkness to Light is a national non-profit committed to empowering adults to prevent child sexual abuse. Darkness to Light has built the largest network of child protection advocates in the world, with over 9,000 authorized program facilitators in all 50 states and 17 international locations.
Stewards of Children® is an evidence-informed child sexual abuse prevention, recognition, and intervention training which has been shown to change child-protective behaviors.
About the Training
Stewards of Children® is a two-hour training that teaches adults practical actions to prevent child sexual abuse or intervene if abuse is suspected. Featuring compelling and engaging content to motivate participants, the program is designed for parents, concerned individuals, and any adult that works with youth.
Through video, the training features survivors who lived through child sexual abuse, experienced it’s immediate and long-term effects, and ultimately were able to find healing.
It also highlights experts who work with children and families and confront abuse on a daily basis. Research suggests that child sexual abuse reports, substantiations, and interventions in cases of abuse increase as a result of training, implying that more children are being identified as victims and able to receive services.
• Increased Awareness of the prevalence, consequences, and circumstances of child sexual abuse
• New Skills to help adults prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse
• Positive Change to organizational policies and procedures
• Individual Empowerment through an understanding of personal responsibility and actionable ways to make a difference
Experts consider child sexual abuse to be one of the most prevalent health problems that children face, with the most serious array of consequences. In fact, 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.
This means that whether you work with youth, are a parent, or a community member, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse.
Please contact HopeWorks’ Community Engagement Department at (410) 997 -0304 for more information and to schedule a training for your organization. Registration for these trainings will appear on our Events page when public registration opens, usually two weeks before the training.
